ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Endangered small tooth sawfish, marine creatures virtually unchanged for millions of years, are exhibiting erratic spinning behavior and dying in unusual numbers in Florida waters. Federal and state wildlife agencies are beginning an effort to rescue and rehabilitate sawfish to find out why.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration announced what it calls an “emergency response” focused on the Florida Keys starting next week. A NOAA news release called the effort unprecedented.

“If the opportunity presents itself, this would be the first attempt ever to rescue and rehabilitate small tooth sawfish from the wild,” said Adam Brame, NOAA Fisheries’ sawfish recovery coordinator.

Sawfish, related to rays, skates and sharks, are named for their elongated, flat snout that contains a row of teeth on each side. They can live for decades and grow quite large, some as long as 16 feet (about 5 meters). They were once found all along the Gulf of Mexico and southern Atlantic coasts in the U.S., but now are mainly in southwestern Florida and the Keys Island chain as their habitats shrink. A related species is found off Australia.

Since late January, state wildlife officials have been documenting what they call an “unusual mortality event” that has affected about 109 sawfish and killed at least 28 of them. There have been reports of abnormal behavior, such as the fish seen spinning or whirling in the water. Other species of fish also appear to have been affected.

“We suspect that total mortalities are greater, since sawfish are negatively buoyant and thus unlikely to float after death,” Brame said.

Officials haven't isolated a cause. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission reported Wednesday that sawfish necropsies have not revealed any pathogen or bacterial infections, nor problems with low water oxygen levels or contaminants such as chemicals, or toxic red tide. Water testing is continuing.

Imagine waking up one day, and every face you see has somehow turned demonic, distorted, or otherwise unfamiliar—a world full of unrecognizable strangers. That’s the everyday reality of many people living with prosopometamorphopsia, an expert-level spelling bee question and rare visual disorder that can distort a face’s shape, texture, color, or even its entire position.

Although the number of cases of prosopometamorphopsia, or PMO, only edges above 100 or so, the various ways in which PMO presents are incredibly varied. For some people, facial features appear to move on their own, while for others they can droop or twist. According to Scientific American, patients reported skin that looked more like tree bark, transformed into geometric shapes, or superimposed faces on other people.

The late Oliver Sacks co-authored a paper about PMO back in 2014, and now Brad Duchaine, a professor of psychological and brain sciences at Dartmouth, is carrying on that legacy of scholarship. In 2021, Duchaine’s lab transitioned from studying face blindness—a condition where someone struggles to recognize people’s faces (or even themselves)—to studying the more niche condition of PMO. The team launched a website dedicated to the condition, and some 60 people reached out with described symptoms.

However, one specific case presented an unprecedented opportunity. While most PMO cases report visual distortions in all contexts, a 58-year-old man described symptoms where he could see faces normally on digital screens and paper, but those same people became ‘demonic’ once viewed in person. This gave Duchaine, along with PhD student Antônio Mello, the unique ability to actually image the faces this PMO patient was seeing. The results of this study were published today in the journal The Lancet.

“In other studies of the condition, patients with PMO are unable to assess how accurately a visualization of their distortions represents what they see because the visualization itself also depicts a face, so the patients will perceive distortions on it too,” Mello, lead author of the study, said in a press statement. “Through the process, we were able to visualize the patient’s real-time perception of the face distortions.”

The RKI is Germany’s government agency public health agency responsible for disease control and prevention. Documents relating to its crisis team’s proceedings were previously regarded as confidential. However, investigative journalists from the magazine Multipolar submitted a Freedom of Information Act request to find out what information the RKI had when they made their decisions.

When the RKI failed to respond, Multipolar filed a lawsuit which compelled RKI to produce the documents.  But the documents have been heavily redacted.

The documents that have now been forcibly published by the RKI obviously have political explosive power, Deutschland Kurier reported, because a name that is critical to the decision made on 17 March is blacked out. What are they covering up?

CNN's Jeffrey Toobin, after being suspended for sexually improper behavior on a work call, said the likely perjury of Fani Willis regarding her relationship with a subordinate paid $700k on the case could end her career.

Fani Willis, the Fulton County District Attorney, has been embroiled in a highly contentious legal battle regarding her involvement in the prosecution of former President Donald Trump and his associates in connection with the 2020 election. The case has been marked by explosive allegations, including claims of a romantic relationship between Willis and Nathan Wade, a special prosecutor working on the case, leading to a series of extraordinary evidentiary hearings and a subsequent court ruling.

A judge ordered Willis to recuse or dismiss her subordinate, hampering the case. “Today was a very good day for Donald Trump,” Toobin said. 

“This case is going nowhere," he continued. "Even if in the extremely unlikely event that this somehow staggers to trial in August or in the fall, think about this: There’s another racketeering case in Georgia where jury selection — not the trial — jury selection has taken a year. This case is never going to trial before the election.”

Toobin called Willis' handling an "embarrassment" and said the case is "going nowhere very quickly."

Scientists from Israel's Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot have gotten the most complete look at a supernova ever, watching and tracking a star's explosion in real time, as noted in a new study.

This discovery is a major step forward in our understanding in one of the most important phenomena in the universe.

The findings of this study were published in the peer-reviewed academic journal Nature.

When a star can no longer produce energy, it dies. The larger stars, which are now filled with heavy elements, will unleash a powerful explosion known as a supernova. This fuses some of those heavy elements together to make even heavier ones, and all of them get blasted out into the cosmos.

This process is essential to the function of the universe, allowing everything to keep expanding and ultimately sending forth the building blocks of the universe's continued expansion.

In other words, everything in the universe is made of stardust, and supernovas are what send that stardust out there to accumulate and make new things. 

The remnants of that star are still there, condensing together to form either a neutron star or a black hole.
